The Xbox handheld that Microsoft and ASUS actually announced is the ROG Xbox Ally family. These portable gaming PCs are real products; the original claim that Microsoft had confirmed a separate, Microsoft-built handheld with unreleased specifications was not supported by an official announcement.
What the ROG Xbox Ally is
Microsoft and ASUS revealed the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X in June 2025 as handhelds developed in collaboration. Xbox says the devices launched on October 16, 2025. They combine ASUS ROG hardware with Windows and an Xbox-focused full-screen experience, including an Xbox button and access to supported games from Xbox and other PC storefronts.
They are handheld gaming PCs, not a small Xbox Series console running console-only software. Players can install supported PC games, use compatible Xbox Play Anywhere titles, or access Xbox through cloud gaming or Remote Play where those services and games are available. Game compatibility and performance vary by title and by device.
What Microsoft has confirmed about future hardware
Microsoft separately announced Project Helix as its next-generation first-party Xbox console, designed to play Xbox console and PC games. The public announcement describes a console; it does not identify Project Helix as a handheld or give a release date or complete specifications.
The earlier version of this article presented a supposed July 2026 CEO briefing, a Zen 5 handheld processor, 1080p/60 targets, OLED and VRR display details, Quick Resume for multiple games, cellular models, prices, and a 2027 launch window as confirmed. The official announcements linked below do not support those claims. They have been removed rather than repeated as product facts.
Which ROG Xbox Ally model is different?
Microsoft and ASUS sell the ROG Xbox Ally and the higher-end ROG Xbox Ally X. Their processors, memory, storage, battery, and other hardware differ, so check the ASUS product specifications for the exact model and region before comparing them. Do not assume that a feature or benchmark for one version applies to the other.
