Nintendo Switch 2 specs are now published by Nintendo, so an alleged July 2026 hardware blueprint is not the source of truth. This updated guide uses Nintendo’s official technical specifications and compatibility information to explain what the system supports—and which performance details remain unpublished.

Nintendo Switch 2: official hardware specifications

  • Screen: 7.9-inch LCD, 1920 × 1080 resolution, HDR10, and variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz.
  • Processor: A custom NVIDIA processor. Nintendo does not name a model or publish a full CPU/GPU specification on its tech-spec page.
  • Storage: 256 GB of UFS storage, with part of that space reserved for system use.
  • TV output: Up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 frames per second. Nintendo also lists 120-fps output at 1920 × 1080 or 2560 × 1440.
  • Game cards: The card slot accepts both Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch game cards.
  • Expandable storage: The console uses microSD Express cards, up to 2 TB. Older microSD cards can be used only to copy screenshots and videos from the original Switch.

What the resolution and refresh-rate figures mean

These are Nintendo’s maximum display and video-output capabilities, not a promise that every game renders natively at 4K or runs at 120 fps. Actual resolution, frame rate, HDR support, and graphics options depend on each game. Check the developer or publisher’s specifications for a particular title.

The official specifications also do not identify the processor as “T239 Drake,” publish memory bandwidth figures, or promise DLSS or ray tracing as universal features. Those details appeared in the old article as if a leaked blueprint had confirmed them. They are not listed on Nintendo’s public spec sheet, so this guide does not present them as official system specifications.

Can Nintendo Switch 2 play original Switch games?

Yes. Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released for the original Switch, and existing account purchases and save data can be transferred. Compatibility is broad but not universal: Nintendo warns that some games may be unsupported or may not work fully. Use Nintendo’s compatibility checker for the individual title before buying or transferring on the assumption that it will work.

Some games have a free update or a paid upgrade for Switch 2. Whether an upgrade exists, what it changes, and whether it costs extra varies by game; backwards compatibility alone does not mean a free performance patch.

Nintendo Switch 2 specs FAQ

Does Switch 2 have an OLED screen?

Nintendo lists a 7.9-inch LCD screen with HDR10 and VRR support. Its published specification does not describe the built-in panel as OLED.

Can Switch 2 output 4K at 120 fps?

Nintendo lists a maximum TV output of 4K at 60 fps, or up to 120 fps at 1080p or 1440p. These are output limits; supported game modes vary by title.

Does every original Switch game work?

No. Many physical and digital Switch games are compatible, but Nintendo says some may be unsupported or only partly compatible. Check the current official list for the game you want to play.
